The capital city and also the second biggest one is Beijing, but the biggest one, and maby the economic capital of the country is Shanghai, which is one of the most important financial centres of the world. Anyway, there are many chinese cities with over one million of inhabitants.
National Broadcaster
CCTV (China Central Television) is the state broadcaster of the country, owned by the national government. It was launched in 1954, but the experimental broadcasts didn't start until four years later.
It was not until the 1980, when the signal of the television station covered all the chinese territory. With the economical reforms which took place in that decade, the station started launching tematic channels and entertainment programs.
As one of the most powerful broadcasting companies, the chinese central television covered the organisation of the 2008 Beijing summer olympic games, and many other international events.
Entertainment Industry
The chinese entertainment industry, was, for many years underdeveloped, due to the censorship of the government, that didn't allow the production of Pop music, which was seen as a decadent style that didn't represent the chinese culture and values. As a result, the C-Pop industry was located firstly in Hong Kong, which, developed a cantonese dialect pop music internationally known as Cantopop. Taiwan, (which is the succesor state of the pre comunist China), developed some years later its own brand of pop music sung in Mandarin language, known as Mandopop, an style that dominates nowadays the Chinese music industry.
Mainland chinese pop music scene had started its slow but steady rise in the first 1990's, with the appearance of Faye Wong ,Na Ying, and Sun Nan, who are some of the first examples of mainland C-pop music, but it was not until the middle 2000's when the mainland chinese pop music grew rapidly. That growth took place thanks to Reallity Shows and musical competitions such as Super Girl, from where singers such as Chris Lee (Li Yuchun), Bibi Zhou (Zhou Bichang) or Jane Zhang (Zhang Liangying), started their careers. That contest also had a conterpart for boys, which gave male singers such as Jason Zhang (Zhang Jie), or Wei Chen, the chance to show all their talent.
Lately, another reallity show, The Voice of China, that has got millions of viewers, has given another generation of new superstars, being Momo Wu (Wu Mochou), Jike Junyi or Demon Lee (Li Daimo), some examples.
