Bhutan is a little country located in the hymalaya mountains, which borders whith China and India. The population of the country is little, with only 742.737 citicens. The echonomy of the country is also little, but quickly improoving, which also has had a reflection in the still nascent musical scene of this country. In fact, This country has taken part once in the ABU Radio Song Festival 2012, which took place in Seoul, the South Korean capital city.
National Broadcaster.
The Bhutan Broadcasting Service is the national broadcaster of this little and montainious conutry. At first this country never had broadcasting institutions, but in 1973, a radio station started operating for first time in Bhutan. That radio station was named as NYAB, (National Youth Association of Bhutan). At first, the station broadcasted only for half an hour every sunday, with a programming based on news and music. 13 years later, the company was renamed after its current name, the government took the control of it, and new technology was introduced in the broadcasts.
In 1999, the television service of the country was introduced. Firstly, the television broadcasts, were limited to few, hours every day, but nowadays, BBS broadcasts 17 hours everyday, with a varied programming.
The broadcasting sector in Bhutan, is experienced a continuous rise, with new radio and television companies appearing. For example Centennial radio, which is also a member of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. Among the music fans, Centennial radio is known for having participated once in the ABU Radio Song Festival.
Entertainment Industry.
The bhutanese entertainment industry is still in its infancy, but it's developing rapidly due to the new technologies, and some programmes, such as singing competitions, or the participation in international music forums such as the ABU Radio Song Festivals. The development of the cinema industry has also boosted the demand of Bhutanese pop music, which is being also known as B-Pop.
